Generator Engineer
Role Overview: The successful candidate will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control of all power generation systems at Charterhouse Lagos. This role ensures that generators function optimally, reducing downtime and supporting the school’s energy needs. The individual will also train relevant staff on generator usage and maintenance and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the installation, inspection, servicing, and repair of diesel-powered generators.
- Perform routine maintenance and scheduled servicing to ensure optimal performance.
- Ensure generators operate efficiently and in line with manufacturer.
- Monitor load capacity, voltage regulation, and fuel efficiency to maintain reliable supply.
- Work with the Director of Teacher Training and Professional Development to train Facilities Management staff on generator operation, basic troubleshooting, and emergency procedures.
- Develop and implement safety protocols for generator use.
- Supervise the generator technician team and coordinate their schedules.
- Provide regular reports on generator performance, fuel consumption, and maintenance schedules to the Facility Manager.
- Maintain detailed logs of inspections, repairs, and parts replacements.
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge:
- Higher National Diploma or B. Eng. In Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in generator maintenance, repairs and power systems, preferably in an industrial setting.
- Strong knowledge of diesel generators, power systems, and electrical distribution.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) certification is preferred (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH).
- Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for reporting.
- Have experience using computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for tracking generator servicing schedules.
- Be capable of working on generators up to 500KVA and above.
- Be technically skilled with expertise in troubleshooting and repairing generators.
- Have strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose and fix power issues efficiently.
- Possess excellent attention to detail to ensure quality control and compliance.
- Have good leadership and training skills to guide other staff members.
- Be highly organised with the ability to maintain records and manage maintenance schedules.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills to report issues and provide recommendations effectively.
